How many of us take for granted all of the history that surrounds us in Springfield?
It really is amazing all of the historical sites that are here as well as how many of them are FREE to enjoy or have very low and reasonable costs.
I am going to be highlighting these sites from time to time starting with the Lincoln Depot (Great Western Depot). Thanks to the State Journal-Register for the following information.
At the Lincoln Depot, Abraham Lincoln said goodbye to Springfield and boarded a train to Washington, D.C. to begin his Presidency as the nation was on the edge of the Civil War.
It is said that Lincoln's concise and emotional Farewell Address ranks in eloquence with the Gettysburg Address.
The Great Western Depot is located at 930 Monroe Street. It is open 10 am-4 pm daily including weekends and holidays from May 1st-August 31st. Admission is FREE courtesy of the State Journal-Register.
This summer there are some special events going on at and around the Depot.
Each Friday at 4:30 pm through August 13th as part of the History Comes Alive series you can attend a re-enactment of Lincoln's Farewell Address at the Great Western Depot.
Every Saturday at 5:00 pm through August 14th there is a program called "Lincoln Bids Farewell to Springfield" at the Lincoln Home to the Old State Capital with the Troubadours.
At 5:30 pm at the Old State Capital you can see the Mystic Chords of Memory and at 6:00 pm also at the Old State Capital you can see Music from the Prairie.
Take the family to see these interesting and FREE events. Be a tourist in your own city.
