September 11th is now being considered a national day of service and there is a website that has been set up to raise awareness of this: www.911dayofservice.org
On this website parents can encourage children to think about and can "adopt" a cause they support in observance of 9/11." Once a person has adopted a cause, if that cause has a volunteer opportunity listed for 9/11, then you can find it. But only after you've picked your charity first.
If I counted correctly, there are over 160 organizations in the Springfield area that need your help. The list is truly wide ranging and impressive...you will have a hard time narrowing down what organization or organizations to support, but your help is much needed and will be greatly appreciated.
