First Comes Love, Then Comes Money: A Couple's Guide to Financial Communication

Bethany and Scott Palmer are known as "The Money Couple" and they have taken their financial sense and made it available for couples to help them learn to communicate financially in their book, First Comes Love, Then Comes Money: A Couple's Guide to Financial Communication (Harper Collins, 2009) Money issues are one of the leading reasons for why so many marriages end in divorce. So communication is key to hopefully avoiding some of those pitfalls, and knowing what to discuss is vital--First Comes Love, Then Comes Money is here to assist you!

Here is the synopsis from the back of First Comes Love, Then Comes Money:

Happy Couples Know How to Talk About Money
The number one causes for divorce is financial infidelity. Now "The Money Couple" reveals the missing ingredient needed before any financial program or plan can work: healthy financial communication. This book tells you how to:
  • Diagnose your level of financial infidelity
  • Identify your individual Money Personality
  • Master the Money Huddle and the Money Dump
  • Achieve financial goals once and for all
I was given a copy of First Comes Love, Then Comes Money to read. I have been married for 13 years and I still found lots in the book very useful. I remember our first couple of years of marriage and I remember how difficult it was to merge our lives financially, I can totally see how quickly a marriage could end in divorce if you do not learn how to communicate about all the financial stuff--it's simply a fact of life. However, even after 13 years of marriage, finances still can be an irritant in our marriage--but then again, we have never fully discussed everything that this book points out--now we have the opportunity and know how to do so.

In my opinion, First Comes Love, Then Comes Money is a book for any couple that share financial responsibility--regardless of whether you are engaged to be married, simply living together or have been married for many years. This book walks you through how the have the financial talk and determine you and your significant others' money personality--saver, spender, risk taker, security seeker or flyer. In addition to the book, Bethany & Scott Palmer offer additional assistance on their website, The Money Couple, including a downloadable list of 20 questions you need to ask before you say 'I do.'
