The Masterwork of a Painting Elephant (Frances Foster Books, 2011) by Michelle Cuevas with pictures by Ed Young is a story about an abandoned baby, Pigeon Jones. who is raised by a former circus elephant who can paint, even though the elephant is a wonderful father, Pigeon still wonders about his human family and Birch still have dreams of his own and this is their journey to discovering and understanding. It is a wonderful read-to story for young children or an independent read for chapter readers.
Here is the synopsis of The Masterwork of a Painting Elephant for the dust cover:
Many people think living on the back of an elephant is pretty strange, but I always felt safe with Birch, like those tiny fish that life harmlessly under the bellies of sharks. Safety, like love, is an odd thing, and it doesn't always come in a package that we get to choose. Because elephants are so fiercely protective of their babies, I was never allowed to leave Birch's back. It's where I slept, ate, played and showered with the help of Birch's water-loaded trunk. An elephant's back is closer to the sun, and my world was calm, bleached with warmth and brightness.
An unlikely family, a grand adventure, and an irresistible love story--the world, as see from the top of a painting elephant.
We thought The Masterwork of a Painting Elephant was a magical story that my 4 year loved to have read to him and I have a feeling my elephant-loving niece will absolutely love to read.
