I have read the story, Stellaluna, to my son many times. I have always loved the lessons that are in the book, I want my son, to understand and live by these life lesson. So, I was very excited to discover that Scholastic (one of my most trusted brands for quality and educational books and materials for children) had taken the beloved story and made it into a DVD, by the same name.
Here is the synopsis of Stellaluna from the back of the DVD case:
Based on the beloved children's book, this fun-filled animated feature follows a spirited young fruit bat who finds friendship, love and acceptance in the most unexpected places! Brimming with music, laughter, warmth and excitement, Stellaluna is sure to capture your heart! When the adorable fruit bat Stellaluna is separated from her mother, she is adopted by a family of birds, but soon finds that she just can't fit in. Her playmates like to sleep at night; she wants to fly. They whistle and sing; she doesn't even have a beak! But just when it seems like she'll always be an outsider, Stellaluna makes an amazing discovery. Now she'll learn to cherish the things that make her different from everyone else. And she'll see that an open mind and an open heart can lead to the greatest gifts of all.
Bonus Features include:
*On Screen Read-Along
*Sing-Along Feature
*Stellaluna Activity Booklet
Stellaluna is also a proud recipient of a few well-deserved (in my opinion) awards, including:
*Parents’ Choice Recommended Award
*iParenting Media Award
*Newport Beach Film Festival Outstanding Achievement in Family Entertainment Award
*Grammy winner for Best Spoken Word Album
The Stellaluna DVD is gear for children ages 2-8, but I think the lessons reach beyond that age. I thought they did a wonderful job transferring this beloved book onto film and we love the Read-Along feature that Scholastic has been adding to many of their DVD--I find it helpful for beginning readers like my son. The activity booklet add to the fun for my son--it is only a few pages long but he got a kick out of it and it helped him work on some fine motor stills (coloring, maze & word search).
Stellaluna has been a frequently requested DVD, especially in the car, for my child. We definitely recommend it to families with young children (8 and under), it contains some great life lessons that everyone should learn and live by (in my opinion)!
Thank you to Scholastic for my sample used in this review, opinions are honest. Review by Michelle.
