Today is National Mustard Day!

I received this sample in the hopes I would share my honest opinions.

I love products that lead to me learning new things. Take something you use or see every day, do you ever stop to think about how much you really know about it? Did you know that mustard was once considered a medicinal plant rather than one used in foods? It was applied to scorpion stings in the beginning (eek!) and eventually used to “cure” toothaches and a number of other ailments. Prepared mustards can be dated back to the romans and even in religion! Pope John XII was so fond of mustard he even created a new position in the Vatican for it! The first mustard maker to the pope was his own nephew. In 1866 Queen Victoria even had her own mustard maker. Mustard has quite a history and, judging by that history, when you find someone who does mustard right you keep them around. Mustard Girl All American Mustards, produced in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin is an artisanal brand which recently made its product debut in major grocery stores including Target.

Each bottle of Mustard Girl All American Mustards features a picture of a smiling blonde country girl. This girl really does exist, her name is Jennifer Connor and her story is on of commitment and inspiration. The Mustard Girl story actually starts with a mustard man. As a college freshman, Jennifer had learned that her favorite mustard was actually homemade by a then 80 year old man, Dave Rendall. Trouble was Rendall was about to retire and denied sharing his recipes with Jennifer. After receiving what Jennifer considered a sign she became more determined than ever and eventually won Rendall over.
