 Want to sleep soundly at night? Your choice of mattress makes the difference between insomnia and restful slumber. Just ask the experts at the National Sleep Foundation. According to the results of a 2011 poll, 92% of people surveyed say that a comfortable mattress makes a difference in whether or not they get a good night's sleep and is one of the most common sleeping problems.

Think about it for just a moment. When was the last time you bought a new mattress? Was it years ago? If it was, you should probably be in the market for something new and more comfortable.

You see, mattresses have a lifespan like other household products. When a mattress starts to show its age, you feel it in your neck and back. It also contributes to insomnia and other sleep-related health disorders.

Top Reasons to Replace Your Mattress

Replacing that lumpy mattress from yesteryear is a great idea for a number of different reasons including;

1. Stress & Relaxation: One 2009 study found that sleeping on a new mattress decreased stress levels significantly in study participants. The right mattress invites relaxation which ultimately promotes good sleep. When you lie on any part of your body for a long time, you put weight on your blood vessels which reduces the blood flowing through them. The result of laying on one body part for too long is that it deprives the skin of oxygen and nutrients forcing your brain to tell you to roll over. Once you do this, you interrupt your sleep.

2. Back & neck pain: Mattresses start to sink as they get older. This is what causes back and neck pain which interrupts sleep. When looking for a new mattress, you should choose one that is not to hard yet not too soft. Focus more on how it feels and less on the brand name or cost. If you have the money to spend, buy the highest quality mattress available. You'll thank yourself for making a sound investment that promotes good health.

Make sure you have the right bedding on your mattress, too (Shop for the season). Choose cooler fabrics for warmer months and warmer fabrics for cooler months. It will help you regulate the temperature of your bedroom more efficiently.

Now that you know what it takes to get a better night’s sleep, what type of mattress will you choose? Avoid buying a mattress sight unseen. You'll want to take the time to test it out before ommitting to buying it.
