A few weeks ago we attended the Chicago Toy & Game Fair there we were introduced to ballinko, a building toy that encourages imagination while inspiring creativity. Not realizing this toy was making its debut we stopped to take a look.
Our daughter wanted to stop and try them out, so we did. While she was building, I was able to meet Mr. & Mrs. Cartwright the inventors. It was here that I learned a little about how this toy was created and the answer may surprise you, from a medical journal. Yes, that is correct, Mr. Cartwright was looking at an image of a cell in a medical journal and was inspired to create ballinko.
I am sure you are asking what are ballinko and that answer is simple. Ballinko is a set of 76 all wood pieces, the break down is 34 balls, 38 wood links, a wood base and 3 flex links, the pieces can be re-assembled as many times as you wish offering countless possibilities.
Our daughter would have stayed at their booth all day if we would have let her. She was working very hard on what she was calling a skyscraper with a swing set on the side.
As a Mom I love that this toy lets children express their own creativity
without any type of preformed ideas on what they should build. I also
find that this set will encourage hand and eye coordination along with
helping kids fine tune their fine motor skills. I also appreciate that
they come in a reusable container and that I do not have to worry about
how to store the pieces once they are removed from the packaging.
My husband and I, like I assume most parents, struggle to find toys that hold our children's attention. We are a family so dependent on devices for our work that we have made a effort to reduce how often out daughter is allowed in front a screen. Toys like ballinko are vital to keeping our kids minds sharpened and opened to the possibility that "fun" can be had without a phone or tablet in their hand.
