Brick Buildings

 

As my sons have grown I have seen them go through toy fads an awful lot. My youngest had a Thomas the Train phase that has led to a lot of money spent and a tote full of trucks and cars in my basement. However, I have also invested a lot of time and money into a toy(s) that both of my sons have stuck with, and have loved for basically their entire lives. That toy is Legos. I believe that Legos are able to defy the laws of aging, because they are so versatile. You can buy a set of blocks when you're young and use it to build things your whole life, while simply changing what you build with your set. My sons have more set than they know what to do with, so obviously the answer was to demolish all of moms hard construction work and build all new creations. I enjoy watching them build but sometimes they are limited by their ability to innovate and make their ideas come to life. I have been able to find books that help them bring their ideas to life, while also giving them new ideas to try and execute. A series of books that I am going to call the "Brick" series from Barron's Educational Series Inc.

There are four books in the set: Brick Beasts and Brick Buildings, both written by Kevin Hall and Brick Animals and Brick Cars and Trucks both written by Warren Elsmore. I'm going to tell you about the books by Kevin Hall, while also assuring you that the two from Warren Elsmore are just as fantastic! Brick Buildings is full of fun and sometimes whimsical designs that will really let the imaginations of the builder take hold. Build along with the easy to follow instructions and watch as buildings such as a windmill, tree house, dragon's lair and even an igloo take shape. The fun thing about these buildings is that once their built you get to create the creatures that live in or around them. That's where Brick Beasts comes in. The second Kevin Hall book in the series lets the builder have a variety of mythical and legendary creatures that will soon inhabit the villages they just built! Build a centaur, unicorn, griffin, ogre, or even a dragon! All of the books in the series feature 40 different designs and many of them use less than 100 bricks! The clear step-by-step instructions are easy to follow and each design begins with a summary of the blocks that are needed!

A series of books perfect for any Lego fan, beginners and pros alike! I personally cant wait for my boys' faces to light up when they see their books, and then again when they finish each design from the inside them.
