Studies have shown that exposing children to a foreign language at a young age makes it easier for them to learn verses waiting until they are in high school. The Little Pim series of award winning foreign language learning DVDs for babies, toddlers and young children (ages 0-6) follows this philosophy. Little Pim currently features 11 different language options--Spanish, Italian, Chinese, German, English, French, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, Hebrew and Portuguese and have expanded beyond DVDs to include apps, music, books, flash cards and more.
The Little Pim series utilizes the total-immersion and repetition philosophies of young learning. The adorable panda, Little Pim serves as the teacher/guide for the children as they participate. And no worries, if you can't speak the specific language yourself--the series is designed for the parents to follow along just as easily!
The Little Pim series has made some new and exciting advancements in their programs, here is some information on the new additions, adapted from the press release I received:
Little Pim has now made their award-winning language learning program available digitally. Sold in Spanish, French, Chinese, English/ESL and the newly added Brazilian Portuguese, the 35-minute episodes can be easily downloaded digitally for tablets and smartphones available through the Little Pim website. Check out the new Little Pim Digital Downloads here!
Little Pim is now also available digitally on LeapFrog. "Eating and Drinking " and “Wake Up Smiling” have just been released through LeapFrog's video app center in Spanish, French and English/ESL, and Chinese Mandarin, German and Italian apps for "Eating and Drinking". The third video app, “Playtime” teaches another 60 words and phrases around the wonders of play, from blocks to boats, and will be available as of Sept. 18th.
Each episode is theme based and can be introduced in any order. These video apps teach young children more than 60 words and phrases for morning and evening routines such as waking up, getting dressed and brushing teeth.
Little Pim’s Spanish, French and Chinese iPad Apps have been awarded the 2012 National Parenting Center Seal of Approval. These interactive games were developed in conjunction with PBS Kids Play and feature three levels of teaching. This is the series’ fourth win from the National Parenting Center. The Little Pim language series has earned 24 consumer and educational awards from leading organizations such as the National Parenting Center and Dr. Toy.
I haven't had the opportunity to test out these new additions, but I was given the opportunity to check out the Little Pim: Fun with Languages: Mandarin Chinese-Disc 2: Wake Up Smiling DVD and the Little Pim: French Bop-15 Favorite Children's Songs music CD with my 5 year old son. I though both were excellent ways to expose children to a different language. My son loved the DVD, we watched it several times and it was fun to listen to him repeat various words in Chinese and even use them appropriately later. I love that you can play it the whole way through or watch it in 5 minute segments to really work on a particular set of words. I am a huge believer in early exposure to foreign languages and Chinese is our language of choice for my son, so Little Pim was perfect!
Thank you to dkcnews for my sample used in this review, opinions are honest. Review by Michelle.
