What is appropriate fancy dress for kids?
There’s often a lot of debate when it comes to what is suitable fancy dress for kids. You may see pictures on Facebook of someone’s little angel dressed as Freddy Krueger. We’ve even seen pictures of five-year-olds dressed as pimps before now. The question is who is actually choosing the outfit; the child or their parents?
When children are dressed in an adult themed costume it’s usually the parent that has chosen the outfit; after all how would a young child actually get the reference. This seems a bit of a waste of time, because surely half the fun of dressing up for kids is pretending to be a fantasy figure they actually know about. For instance, with Star Wars – A New Hope being such a big deal right now Star Wars kids’ costumes are bound to be popular with children. Isn’t it better to dress a child as a hero they can identify with rather than a fictional serial killer?
Isn’t it just a bit of fun?
You’ve seen all the comments on social media telling people to lighten up when they make comments about a kid’s fancy dress costume being unsuitable. There is an argument that all fancy dress is just make-believe; it’s not meant to be taken seriously. Quite often even adult costumes can be very close to crossing some people’s line of good taste.
Does it really matter? Probably not; but here’s the deal, do you really want to cause offence by having fun? To some people dressing a young child as a character like Freddy Krueger is offensive; especially when you consider that the cult horror character was a child killer. Aside from the offence aspect there’s also the point we touched on earlier, about the child not knowing anything about who they are supposed to be. How is that fun for the child?
Why age appropriate costumes are more fun for kids
Ask an eight-year-old what the Halloween movies are about and hopefully they won’t be able to tell you; so why dress them up as Michael Myers? Kids can’t watch Child’s Play so why does it make sense to dress them as Chucky?
The whole point of dressing up is having fun and kids have a lot more fun if they are dressed as characters they can relate to, such as those from the Star Wars movie franchise. Adults usually dress their kids in costumes that are not child friendly simply so they get noticed. They want to be the centre of conversation and for people to remember the outfit. Dressing a child in an outfit they can relate to may not get them noticed as much but it will mean they enjoy the experience more.
The topic of what is appropriate fancy dress for kids will probably always be hotly debated. In the grand scheme of things a costume is probably not that important but isn’t it worthwhile as an adult, thinking about what your child will have more fun with and what will lead to everyone having a good time without any offence being caused.
