Teaching children about the differences in the world is something that all parents hope to do before their child grows up. Everyone has something about them that is different from others, and sometimes it leads to them being treated differently.  To help kids better understand the world of differences we live in, we sometimes turn to books. Cooper and the Big Apple for example, puts a spotlight on Autism.

Did you know, that 1 in every 110 children is diagnosed with autism? Camille Cohn and her daughter, Riley Cohn, created Cooper and the Big Apple to help changes some of the misconceptions of autism. The Story follows Cooper the cat when he goes on a trip to New York City with his friend, Jennifer. The autistic Cooper is confused by the figures of speech and nicknames that people use to describe the city's landmarks. The Big Apple wasn't really a big apple, Queens wasn't really a queen, and climbing Lady Liberty didn't really mean climbing a lady (that would be rude!). Even though New York City wasn't at all what Cooper expected, the city was beautiful and he did have fun. This book can help children understand the world through the eyes of a child with autism, teach autistic children to move on past what is already familiar and experience new things, and to help children learn about figures of speech.

A book with such an important lesson to teach is a great gift for anytime , so with Christmas on its way, why not give the gift of insight by giving them "Cooper and the Big Apple"? A peek into the world of someone who is different, but not so different from you at the same time.
